Calling To Action
In order to make a change in society's sexist views, society needs to become more sensitive to sexism. It is the core of today's most crucial issues: AIDS, abortion, homosexuality, women in the service and even population control. Trying to change society's views on basically everything in the media and the world is a very difficult thing to accomplish. Fighting everyday blatant sexism as it manifests itself in our homes, workplaces, schools and social spaces is the most efficient way to combat sexism at it's core; us. We are sexist in some form or another. It is deeply ingrained in us. To fight it, we must stop it where it starts. Simple things like confronting a friend if they made a sexist remark, not joining in the sexual degrading of women and so forth will go a long way. Not using words that degrade women would go a long way among peers and family to show you do not support sexism. Instilling in our own children that men and women are both equal again will combat sexism. Basically just stop fueling sexist ideas in our own mind by working on ourselves.
How Will This Help? One might ask, "But how will this help stop sexism?". Simply changing our own thoughts affects our actions. Our words. Being accepting let's other around us begin to be more accepting as well. The affect this would have on society's view on women would be phenomenal. Changing the way we think would release the burden put on women to conform to social norms and to live inside the box society has created for them to live in. Women could speak and not be shut up by others around them for their beliefs. Women could wear clothes and not be deemed a slut. Women could buy contraception and not be deemed a slut. Men would stop calling each other "sissys", a degrading term which means you are acting like a girl, which is a negative thing to be. So many good things would come from simply changing our own mindset. |
A More Socially Just World
Instilling new values and morals in our minds will affect those around us and will shift the mindset of others as well. Friends will start to think differently, family will, co-workers, etc. It's important to speak out about the social unjust involved in sexism. In doing so the world would be a much more equal place and not as segregated and objectifying of women. In a world like this, people would get a long much better and women could feel comfortable in the media and in professional standpoints. Everyone would be equal no matter the gender. That is how we were intended to live. Society has shifted our views and ideas, but we are society. We have the power to change society by starting with ourselves.
